Abstract Although maize is one of the main crops in the Northeast region, yield is still considered low when compared to other regions. One of the main solutions to increasing yield is the selection of cultivars adapted to the conditions of the Northeast region. Thus, the present study aims to use the Bayesian segmented regression model to evaluate the adaptability and stability of maize. The experiment was set up in a randomized block design with two repetitions, where 25 maize hybrids were evaluated in different states. Initially, the analysis of variance was performed. Then, the Bayesian approach of the segmented regression method was used to select the hybrids regarding adaptability and stability. There was a difference between the genotypes indicated using the a priori distribution and those indicated by the minimally informative a priori distribution. Hybrids 20A55HX, 2B433HX, 2B512HX, and P2830H were considered ideal for the Northeast region.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a influência de oito porta-enxertos no rendimento, na qualidade do fruto e na sobrevivência de laranjeiras (Citrus sinensis) 'Pêra CNPMF D6' cultivadas, em regime de sequeiro, em solo coeso do Nordeste brasileiro. Em 2014-2018, foram avaliados, no delineamento de blocos ao acaso, o rendimento, os frutos e a sobrevivência de árvores plantadas em 1997. O rendimento foi avaliado a partir da produção anual de frutos, da eficiência produtiva e do índice de alternância produtiva. A sobrevivência das árvores foi considerada a percentagem de plantas que permaneceram vivas até 2018. A qualidade dos frutos foi avaliada por meio de atributos físico-químicos. 'Cravo' confirmou seu bom desempenho produtivo. Apesar do menor número de árvores, o porta-enxerto limoeiro rugoso 'Mazoe' induziu a maior produtividade de frutos. O híbrido 'Cravo' x 'Cleópatra' e o limoeiro 'Volkameriano' favoreceram a maior sobrevivência das árvores, enquanto o citrandarin 'Indio' e o limoeiro 'Cravo' resultaram em níveis intermediários. Os citrandarins 'San Diego' e 'Riverside' induziram, respectivamente, árvores menores, com alta eficiência de produção e maior índice de alternância produtiva, respectivamente. Frutos com menos suco e massa foram induzidos, respectivamente, pelo citrandarin 'Riverside' e o limoeiro 'Volkameriano'. Conclui-se que o porta-enxerto 'Mazoe' induz maior rendimento de frutos e 'Cravo' x 'Cleópatra' e 'Volkameriano' maior sobrevivência. Além disso, todos os porta-enxertos, exceto 'Riverside' e 'Volkameriano', induzem frutos que atendem os requerimentos mínimos de qualidade.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to determine the influence of eight rootstocks on the yield, fruit quality, and survival of 'Pêra CNPMF D6' sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) trees grown under rainfed conditions in a cohesive soil of the Brazilian Northeast. In 2014-2018, the yield, fruits, and survival of trees planted in 1997 were evaluated in a randomized complete block design. Yield was assessed using annual fruit production, yield efficiency, and the alternate bearing index. Tree survival was considered the percentage of plants that remained alive until 2018. Fruit quality was evaluated by physicochemical attributes. 'Cravo' confirmed its good yield performance. Despite the lower number of trees, the 'Mazoe' rough lemon rootstock induced the highest fruit yield. The 'Cravo' x 'Cleópatra' hybrid and 'Volkameriano' lemon favored the highest trees survival, whereas 'Indio' citrandarin and 'Cravo' lime resulted in intermediate levels. The 'San Diego' and 'Riverside' citrandarins induced shorter tree with a high yield efficiency and a higher alternate bearing index, respectively. Fruits with less juice and mass were induced, respectively, by 'Riverside' citrandarin and 'Volkameriano' lemon. It can be concluded that the 'Mazoe' rootstock induces a higher fruit yield and 'Cravo' x 'Cleópatra' and 'Volkameriano', a greater survival. In addition, all rootstocks, except 'Riverside' and 'Volkameriano', induce fruit that meet the minimum quality requirements.

ABSTRACT The search for alternative rootstocks to the ‘Rangpur’ lime tree is a challenge to the sustainability of citrus in the Tabuleiros Costeiros (Coastal Tablelands) of Northeastern Brazil. New varieties should meet high drought tolerance with water deficit, cohesive soils, resistance to citrus diseases and inducing high production of fruit. In this work, the performance of ‘Pera’ sweet orange was evaluated on ‘Tropical Sunki’ mandarin and 27 hybrid citrus rootstocks in Umbaúba, Sergipe. A local selection of the ‘Rangpur’ lime was the control. Planting was in 2013 at tree spacing of 6.0 × 3.0 m, without irrigation. Tree size, fruit yield and quality, tree survival rate and graft-compatibility were assessed until 2019. Experimental design was completely randomized blocks with 29 treatments, three replicates and four plants in the plot. Two selection indices were applied to the data to assist in decision making. The ‘Tropical Sunki’ mandarin induced similar cumulative fruit yield in relation to the ‘Rangpur’ lime, suggesting a good drought tolerance of the former rootstock. The TSKC × (LCR × TR) - 073 induced slightly lower productivity, compensated by higher productive efficiency and higher concentration of soluble solids, whereas LCR × TR - 001 and HTR - 166 were highly efficient dwarfing rootstocks. The multiplicative and the rank sum indices showed high correlation, both classifying ‘Tropical Sunki’ mandarin, ‘Santa Cruz Rangpur’ lime, LVK × LCR - 010 and - 038, HTR - 127, in addition to the three aforementioned hybrids, as superior to the local selection of ‘Rangpur’ lime.

ABSTRACT The water deficit is one of the main limiting factors to the yield of sweet oranges. The present study aimed to determine alternative rootstocks to ‘Rangpur’ lime for ‘Pera’ sweet oranges grown on tropical hardsetting soils with greater potential tolerance to water deficit. Six citrus scion/rootstock combinations were grown during eight years in an orchard established in Sergipe, Brazil. The tree height, number of fruits per plant, cumulated fruit yield, leaf proline content and survival rate of trees were evaluated between 6th and 8th year after planting. Greater rate of tree loss occurred among the sweet orange onto ‘Orlando’ tangelo, which also induced the lowest cumulative fruit yield. After prolonged water deficit, moderate to high proline content was found in trees grafted on Sunki of Florida mandarin × C13 citrange – 012° (TSKFL × CTC13-012), ‘Orlando’ tangelo, ‘Indio’ and ‘Riverside’ citrandarin. Conversely, after a short water deficit during the wet season, trees on ‘San Diego’ citrandarin and Rangpur lime clone of Centro Nacional de Pesquisa Mandioca e Fruticultura – CNPMF 03 ‘Rangpur’ lime showed higher proline content. Trees onto TSKFL × CTC13-012 and ‘Indio’ also induced the greatest accumulated fruit yield at the 8th year after planting. It is assumed that ‘San Diego’ and CNPMF 03 ‘Rangpur’ induce response more quickly to water deficit, whereas TSKFL × CTC13-012 and ‘Indio’ are less susceptible to prolonged deficit. Therefore, trees on ‘San Diego’ and Indio citrandarin, CNPMF-03 ‘Rangpur’ lime, TSKFL × CTC13-012 hybrid present greater potential to tolerate water deficit and produce more fruits on the hardsetting soils of the coastal tablelands of the Brazilian Northeast.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a interação entre genótipos e ambientes para o escurecimento de grãos de feijão carioca (Phaseolus vulgaris), a fim de selecionar linhagens que associem escurecimento lento, arquitetura ereta, tolerância ao acamamento, e maior produtividade e peso de 100 grãos, com boa adaptabilidade e estabilidade para esses caracteres. Foram avaliadas 44 linhagens pré-selecionadas, oriundas de cruzamentos entre uma cultivar com escurecimento lento e arquitetura prostrada e quatro cultivares com escurecimento normal e arquitetura ereta, em experimentos de campo conduzidos em 15 ambientes (combinações de locais, épocas de semeadura e anos). Ao se considerar as médias, a adaptabilidade e a estabilidade para cada caráter isoladamente, a maior parte das linhagens apresentou desempenho satisfatório: 75% para escurecimento lento, 48% para alta produtividade, 59% para arquitetura ereta, 84% para tolerância ao acamamento e 68% para peso de 100 grãos. Os efeitos dos ambientes e da interação entre genótipos e ambientes são importantes para os cinco caracteres estudados. As linhagens CNFC 16754 e CNFC 16820 apresentam escurecimento lento dos grãos, alta produtividade e peso de 100 grãos, plantas mais eretas e alta tolerância ao acamamento, além de alta adaptabilidade e estabilidade para esses caracteres, o que mostra o seu potencial para recomendação como novas cultivares e confirma que é possível reunir fenótipos desejáveis para os cinco caracteres avaliados.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the interaction between genotypes and environment for seed-coat darkening of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) seeds, in order to select lines that combine slow darkening, upright plants, resistance to lodging, and higher yield and 100-grain weight, with good adaptability and stability for these traits. Forty four pre-selected lines, originating from crosses between one cultivar with slow darkening and prostrate plants and four cultivars with normal darkening and upright plants, were evaluated in field trials conducted in 15 environments (combinations of locations, crop seasons, and years). Considering the mean values, adaptability, and stability for each isolated trait, most of the lines presented satisfactory performance: 75% for slow darkening, 48% for high yield, 59% for upright plants, 84% for resistance to lodging, and 68% for 100-grain weight. The effects of environments and of the genotype by environment interaction are important for the five studied traits. The CNFC 16754 and CNFC 16820 lines present slow seed-coat darkening, high yield and 100-grain weight, more upright plant architecture, and greater resistance to lodging, besides high adaptability and stability for these traits, which shows their potential for recommendation as new cultivars and confirms that it is possible to join desirable phenotypes for the five traits evaluated.

Abstract: ‘BRS FS307’ is a common bean cultivar with mulatto grain developed for the Northeast of Brazil. Presents the following characteristics: cycle semi-early, yield potential of 4.145 kg ha-1 and a mean yield of 2.703 kg ha-1, i.e., 13.9% higher than that of the control cultivars (BRS Marfim and BRS Agreste).

Resumo A produção de tangerinas é incipiente na região Nordeste, embora o mercado consumidor regional seja expressivo. Há poucos estudos sobre o desempenho de tangerineiras nas condições tropicais do Brasil, considerando-se que, em geral, a qualidade e o rendimento de frutos dessas frutíferas sejam mais expressivos em regiões de clima subtropical e mediterrâneo. Neste trabalho, avaliaram-se crescimento de plantas, produção e qualidade de frutos de quatro híbridos de tangerineira (tangerineira-tangor ‘Piemonte’, tangor ‘Murcott’ e tangerineira-tangelos ‘Page’ e ‘Nova’ ) enxertados em limoeiro ‘Cravo’, em Umbaúba-SE. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com três repetições e três plantas por parcela. O plantio foi realizado em 2008, no espaçamento de 6,0 m x 3,0 m, em cultivo de sequeiro. A tangerineira-tangor ‘Piemonte’ foi mais produtiva que o tangor ‘Murcott’ e os tangerineira-tangelos ‘Page’ e ‘Nova’ , nas condições avaliadas em Umbaúba-SE, até ao décimo primeiro ano de plantio. Para a qualidade dos frutos, a tangerineira-tangor ‘Piemonte’ e o Tangerineira-tangelo ‘Page’ podem ser indicados tanto para o consumo in natura quanto para processamento, pois apresentaram resultados superiores para sólidos solúveis totais, ratio, rendimento industrial e vitamina C em relação ao tangor ‘Murcott’.

Abstract The production of mandarins is incipient in Northeastern Brazil in spite of the large regional market. Few studies have reported the performance of mandarins under the tropical conditions in Brazil, considering that, in general, the quality and yield of these fruits are more expressive in regions of subtropical and Mediterranean climates. In this work, tree size, fruit production and quality of four mandarin hybrids (‘Piemonte’ mandarin-tangor, ‘Murcott’ tangor and ‘Page’ and ‘Nova’ tangelo-mandarin) grafted on ‘Rangpur’ lime rootstock in Umbaúba, State of Sergipe, Brazil, were evaluated. The experimental design was randomized blocks with three replicates and three trees per plot. Planting was carried out in 2008 at tree spacing of 6.0 x 3.0 m in rainfed cultivation system. ‘Piemonte’ mandarin-tangor was more productive than ‘Murcott’ tangor and ‘Nova’ and ‘Page’ tangelo-mandarin, under the conditions evaluated in Umbaúba up to the eleventh year after planting. Regarding fruit quality, ‘Piemonte’ mandarin-tangor and ‘Page’ tangelo-mandarin can be indicated both for fresh consumption and for processing due to their higher total soluble solids, ratio and vitamin C content in relation to ‘Murcott’ tangor.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar a cultivar de girassol (Helianthus annuus) com maior potencial produtivo para cultivo no Semiárido Nordestino, em condições de campo, com irrigação suplementar. Determinaram-se o desempenho fotossintético e o rendimento da planta em ensaios de campo. Os experimentos foram realizados em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com 12 cultivares plantadas em espaçamento 0,70x0,30 m. Foram determinadas taxas fotossintéticas acima de 27 μmol m-2 s-1 e rendimento médio de grãos de 2.364,68 kg ha-1 e de óleo de 961,96 kg ha-1. Este desempenho foi possível em razão da: alta condutância estomática em 'Aguara 4', 'BRS 322' e 'CF 101', baixa perda de água por transpiração em 'M 734', 'BRS 321', 'BRS 324', 'BRS 387' e 'Helio 251', ou alta eficiência fotossintética no uso de água em 'Helio 251' e 'BRS 387'. A maioria das cultivares forneceu grãos e óleo em quantidades similares àquelas das maiores áreas produtoras brasileiras. As cultivares com maior rendimento no Semiárido brasileiro, cultivadas com irrigação suplementar, são 'Aguara 4', 'CF 101' e 'BRS 322' com alto rendimento de aquênios e óleo e 'M 734' com alto rendimento de aquênios. As cultivares de menor susceptibilidade ao estresse hídrico severo são 'Helio 251' e 'BRS 387' com maior eficiência fotossintética no uso da água.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to identify the sunflower (Helianthus annuus) cultivar with the highest yield potential for cultivation in the semiarid region of the Brazilian Northeast, under field conditions, with supplementary irrigation. Plant photosynthetic performance and yield were determined in field trials. The experiments were carried out in a randomized complete block design with 12 cultivars planted at 0.70x0.30 m. Net photosynthetic rates above 27 μmol m-2 s-1 and average achene yield of 2,364.68 kg ha-1 and oil yield 961.96 of kg ha-1 were determined. This performance was achieved due to: high stomatal conductance in 'Aguara 4', 'BRS 322', and 'CF101', low water loss through transpiration in 'M 734', 'BRS 321', 'BRS 324', 'BRS 387', and 'Helio 251', or high-intrinsic photosynthetic efficiency in 'Helio 251' and 'BRS 387'. Most cultivars provided grain amounts and oil contents similar to those of cultivars grown in the largest Brazilian producing areas. The cultivars that provide the highest yield in the Brazilian semiarid region, when grown under supplementary irrigation, are 'Aguara 4', 'CF 101', and 'BRS 322' with a high achene and oil yield, and 'M 734' with high achene yield. The less susceptible cultivars to severe water deficit are 'Helio 251' and 'BRS 387' with a high-intrinsic photosynthetic efficiency.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de nove porta-enxertos sobre os parâmetros vegetativos, produtivos e qualitativos da laranjeira-doce 'Jaffa' (Citrus sinensis) e sobre a sua suscetibilidade a três ácaros-praga (Eutetranychus banksi, Tetranychus mexicanus e Phyllocoptruta oleivora). Os seguintes parâmetros foram avaliados: crescimento vegetativo, produtividade, características fisioquímicas dos frutos e densidade de ácaros-praga. A tangerineira 'Sunki Tropical' conferiu elevada produtividade à laranjeira 'Jaffa', enquanto o tangeleiro 'Orlando' e o limoeiro 'Rugoso Vermelho' induziram frutos maiores, com baixos valores Brix e menos ácidos à laranjeira 'Jaffa'. Os citrandarins 'Indio' e 'Riverside' induziram frutos mais ácidos e de tamanhos menores, assim como baixa produtividade acumulada e menor copa. Adicionalmente, o limoeiro 'Cravo Santa Cruz', o citrandarin 'San Diego' e os híbridos HTR-051 e LVK x LCR-010 conferiram menor produção acumulada à laranjeira 'Jaffa'. Os porta-enxertos não influenciaram os níveis populacionais dos ácaros avaliados. A tangerineira 'Sunki Tropical', o limoeiro 'Cravo Santa Cruz' e o limoeiro 'Rugoso Vermelho' se destacam como excelentes opções de porta-enxertos para a laranjeira 'Jaffa' na região Nordeste do Brasil.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of nine rootstocks on 'Jaffa' sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) for its vegetative, productive, and qualitative traits, and for its susceptibility to three pest mites (Eutetranychus banksi, Tetranychus mexicanus and Phyllocoptruta oleivora). The following parameters were evaluated: vegetative growth, yield, physiochemical characteristics of fruit, and density of pest mites. 'Sunki Tropical' mandarin conferred high cumulative yields whereas 'Orlando' tangelo and 'Rugoso Vermelho' lemon imparted bigger fruit with low brix, and less acidity to 'Jaffa'. Indio and 'Riverside' citrandarins induced more acid fruit of smaller sizes, as well as low-cumulated yields and canopy volumes. Also, the 'Cravo Santa Cruz' lime, 'San Diego' citrandarin, and the hybrids HTR-051 and LVK x LCR-010 conferred lower-cumulated yields to 'Jaffa'. The rootstocks did not influence the population levels of the evaluated mites. 'Sunki Tropical' mandarin, 'Cravo Santa Cruz' lime and 'Rugoso Vermelho' lemon stand up as excellent rootstock options for 'Jaffa' sweet orange in the Northeastern Brazil.

Abstract BRS FC104 is a carioca seeded common bean cultivar with super-early maturity (mean of 65 days; emergence to physiological maturity) and disease resistance superior to other early maturity carioca seeded cultivars. Is is recommended for growing in 21 Brazilian states and has high yield potential (3792 kg ha-1), a mean yield of 2186 kg ha-1, and 6.9% higher mean of the relative yield compared to the control cultivars.

Abstract BRS FP403 is a common bean cultivar from the black bean market class with high grain yield and yield potential, high commercial and cooking quality, and moderate resistance to fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli) and root rot diseases (Fusarium solani f. sp. phaseoli and Rhizoctonia solani).

ABSTRACT The cultivation of genotypes non-adapted to the cultivation region of interest is among the main factors responsible for low yield. The aim of the present study is to select hybrid maize through GGE biplot analysis and to assess its adaptability and stability in different environments in Northeastern Brazil. Twenty-five hybrid maize cultivars were assessed in ten different environments in Northeastern Brazil in 2012 and 2013 based on the randomized block design, with two replications. The analysis of variance and assessment of genotype adaptability and stability were made through GGE biplot analysis, based on grain yield. Analysis of variance results showed different performances depending on the genotype, as well as genotype/environment interaction. The biplot analysis was efficient on data interpretation and represented 63.73% of the total variation in the first two main components, it also allowed classifying the ten environments into three macro-environments. Most environments were positively correlated. Hybrids 2 B 604 HX, 30 A 95 HX, 2 B 587 HX and 2 B 710 HX were responsive and stable. Hybrid 30 A 16 HX was recommended for macro-environments2 and 3. Cultivar 30 A 68 HX was recommended to environment 1. São Raimundo das Mangabeiras and Nova Santa Rosa counties were discriminating and representative. Nossa Senhora das Dores, Umbaúba, Teresina, Brejo, Frei Paulo, Colinas and Balsa counties were ambiguous and non-recommended for further evaluations.

Abstract BRS Sublime is a common bean cultivar with carioca grains, high nutritional grain quality, and high yield potential (4667 kg ha-1). It has a normal cycle, upright growth, low loss rates in the mechanical harvest, and is recommended for planting in 19 Brazilian states, in the three main common bean cultivation regions. It is the first cultivar developed in the world with angular leaf spot resistance.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os teores de prolina em cultivares de girassol (Helianthus annuus), em condições de deficit hídrico natural na região do Semiárido brasileiro. Treze cultivares foram semeadas em experimentos estabelecidos em três áreas do Nordeste brasileiro. O teor de prolina foi determinado em folhas de plantas no estádio R4-R5. Diferenças significativas entre cultivares ocorreram apenas onde a disponibilidade de água foi menor. As médias de prolina variaram de 3,47 a 17,41 μg g-1. As cultivares de girassol BRS387, BRS323 e BRS324 apresentaram os maiores teores de prolina com 54,74, 46,27 e 35,16 μg g-1, respectivamente. Essas cultivares são as que acumulam mais prolina em condições de deficit hídrico severo.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the proline content of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) cultivars, in the conditions of natural water deficit in the Brazilian semiarid region. Thirteen cultivars were sown in experiments set in three sites in the Brazilian Northeast. Proline content was determined on leaves from plants at the R4-R5 stage. Significant differences among cultivars occurred only where water availability was lower. Proline averages ranged from 3.47 to 17.41 μg g-1. The sunflower cultivars BRS387, BRS323, and BRS324 showed the greatest proline contents with 54.74, 46.27, and 35.16 μg g-1, respectively. These are the cultivars that accumulate more proline under conditions of a severe water deficit.

Resumen Las poblaciones de ácaros plaga en un agroecosistema, pueden desarrollarse bajo la influencia de varias variables abióticas y bióticas, incluyendo el cultivar de la planta huésped. Se compararon la fluctuación poblacional de ácaros plaga en veinte cultivares de cítricos injertados en limón (Citrus limonia). Ácaros adultos de herrumbre Phyllocoptruta oleivora (Acari: Eriophyidae), Tejano Eutetranychus banksi y Tetranychus mexicanus (Acari: Tetranychidae) se contaron mensualmente en cada cultivar copa a partir de abril de 2011 a febrero de 2013 en el estado de Sergipe, noreste de Brasil. Los ácaros E. banksi y T. mexicanus fueron influenciados, registrando un pico poblacional superior de E. banksi en naranja dulce 'Valencia Montemorellos' en febrero de 2012 comparada con los otros cultivares y poblaciones más grandes de T. mexicanus que fueron encontrados en naranja dulce 'Lima' en enero de 2013 comparado con los limones 'Tahití IAC 5' y 'IAC 5-1'. Sin embargo; la población de P. oleivora, no fue diferente entre cultivares cítricos y solo se observó una variación con respecto al tiempo. Variables bióticas y abióticas fueran importantes mecanismos que subyacen a este tipo de respuestas. Se concluye que las abundancias de los ácaros E. banksi y T. mexicanus fueron influenciadas por cultivares copa sólo en algunos períodos; lo que sugiere mecanismos de resistencia putativos en algunos genotipos a estas plagas.

Abstract Pest populations in a given agroecosystem may be influenced by several abiotic and biotic variables, including the host plant cultivar. We compared the population fluctuation of pest mites in twenty citrus scion cultivars grafted on Rangpur lime (Citrus limonia). Adults of citrus rust mite Phyllocoptruta oleivora (Acari: Eriophyidae), Texas citrus mite Eutetranychus banksi and Tetranychus mexicanus (Acari: Tetranychidae) were monthly counted in each scion cultivar from April 2011 to February 2013 in Sergipe state, northeastern Brazil. Larger E. banksi population peak was recorded on sweet orange 'Valência Montemorellos' in February 2012 compared to the other cultivars and larger populations of T. mexicanus were found on sweet orange 'Lima' in January 2013 in comparison to acid limes 'Tahiti IAC 5' and 'IAC 5-1'. The population of P. oleivora, however was not different among scion cultivars and varied only with time. Abiotic and biotic variables were important mechanisms underlying such responses. We conclude the mites abundances E. banksi and T. mexicanus were influenced by scion cultivars only in some periods, suggesting putative resistance mechanisms in some genotypes to these pests.
